Historic Sitka, Eagle Center and Russian Dancers

This unique excursion visits the historical highlights of the former capital city of Russian America, and includes a visit to the Raptor Rehabilitation Center. At the center, you will learn how its volunteers help wild birds from capture to rehabilitative care and hopeful release. Upon leaving the center, your guide will provide a narrative recap of life in Sitka when it served as the capital of Russian America, as well as life in Sitka today. The tour will include a short drive along the highway bordering Sitka Sound to view historical sites such as the Russian Cemetery and the Sitka National Historical Park, where the Battle of Alaska was fought in 1804. The park hosts cultural exhibits, as well as native Alaskan craftsmen working in their totem pole art form. Ample time is allowed to visit the cultural center or photograph totems. The tour’s rousing conclusion is an authentic Russian folk dance performed by the New Archangel Dancers. Carnival Cruise Lines was honored in 2000 with a bald eagle that was named “Jubilee”, after the M/S Jubilee had cruised the Alaskan waters for 3 years. We are happy to say that “Jubilee” was treated, brought back to care, and released. A donation box is available on board with donations from the guests of the Carnival Spirit going toward the Raptor Rehabilitation Center. Approximately 3 1/4 hours.
